MU Celebrates Ability Week: Oct. 3 - 7, 2011

The annual week-long commemoration was established at MU in 2010 as part of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and coincides with National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The events are designed to highlight the valuable contributions and diverse skills people with disabilities bring to our MU campus and society. Program offerings also help educate our community about the many challenges that people with all forms of disabilities encounter daily.

Celebrate Ability Week is sponsored by MSA/GPC, Student Life, MUSE, One Mizzou MU Office of Disability Services, Office of the ADA Coordinator, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, College of Education, School of Health Professions, Journalism School, Trulaske College of Business, CAFNR, School of Natural Resources and DAP.

Monday, Oct. 3, 2011

  • Celebrate Accessible Sports: Adaptive Golf Demonstration
    1 - 2:30 p.m., Student Recreation Complex
    Presented by: Dany Baker and Jerry Hitzhusen
    Kick off Celebrate Ability week by learning about accessible golf with Dany Baker. Learn about the latest technologies making golf accessible to everyone, and try them out for yourself!
  • Wheelchair Basketball Open House
    2:30 - 4 p.m., Student Recreation Complex
    Presented by: MU's Wheelchair Basketball Team
    Come out for an afternoon with MU's nationally known 2011-12 Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball Team. Meet coach Ron Lykins, watch a demonstration, and find out about one of the most exciting sports programs at the University of Missouri.

  • Student Perspectives on Disability
    11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., 2212A Student Center
    Presented by: MUSE and ONE Mizzou
    MUSE and ONE Mizzou will lead a panel discussion of MU students with disabilities. They will discuss their personal experiences and answer any questions you have about what it's like to live – and thrive – as persons with disabilities.
  • The ADA: Civil Rights and the Spirit of the Law
    1 - 2:00 p.m., 2212A Student Center
    Presented by: Lee Henson, Troy Balthazor, and Amber Cheek
    Come learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act, its roots in the disability rights movement, and the ways its evolution is impacting the lives of persons with disabilities.
  • Marlee Matlin Presentation (followed by a book signing)
    7:00 p.m., Jesse Auditorium
    Presented by: Lee Henson, Troy Balthazor, and Amber Cheek
    You are invited to spend the evening with Academy Award winning actress, author, and disability rights advocate Marlee Matlin. Marlee will share her experiences as a Deaf woman in the entertainment industry, and speak about the ways she continues to break down barriers with her work. She will sign copies of her books after her talk.

  • Accessibility Expo
    11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Lowry Mall
    Join us at a street fair on Lowry Mall to meet representatives from local disability organizations and try your hand at using different accessible technologies.
  • Children of a Lesser God Movie Showing
    8 p.m., Memorial Union, Jesse Wrench Auditorium
    Come see the movie that won Marlee Matlin an Academy Award for Best Actress and gave America a window into Deaf culture.

Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011

  • Allies for Inclusion: the Ability Exhibit Workshop Edition
    11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., 2212A Student Center
    Presented by: Karen Myers
    Using a multi-media approach, this workshop uses interactive activities to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities through respect for others, comfort during interactions, and awareness of disability etiquette.
  • Applying Universal Design in the Classroom
    1-2 p.m., 2212A Student Center
    Presented by: Gina Cylon
    Gina Ceylan will present a fast-paced, interactive lecture on ways teachers and professors can make their classes and activities accessible to everyone.

Friday, Oct. 7, 2011

  • Premiere screening of "Trajectories: Four Stories of Creative Ability."
    4-9:00 p.m. and A131 Fine Arts Building
    Come see the premiere of Keith Montgomery's eye-opening documentary exploring the artistic passions of four MU students with disabilities. This film, a collaboration between MUSE and the Mizzou Student Artist Community, will delve into the universality of the creative mind and challenge accepted notions of "normal."
  • Screening of "Shameless: The Art of Disability"
    4-9:00 p.m. and A131 Fine Arts Building
    Bonnie Sherr Klein's return to filmmaking explores the creative expression of disability through art. Her intimate documentary follows five disabled artists and performers (herself included) as they debunk Hollywood's stereotypes, explore disability culture, and explain a hidden, core truth: that living with disability is itself an art.
  • Mizzou After Dark Presents Dinner and a Movie: X-Men First Class
    7 p.m., Jesse Wrench Auditorium, Memorial Union
    Come see a fully accessible version of the movie with Descriptive Video and Captions.
