MU Celebrates our 19th Annual Black Culture Awareness Week: Nov. 6-11, 2011

Join the University of Missouri Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center in a week-long exploration of the Black Culture Center with events and information about the history of the African American experience at MU. Learn about student stereotypes, African Origins of Civilization, campus history, and more. Black Culture Awareness week began in 1992 as part of an on-going dialogue about race in America and on campus. Activities are open to students, faculty, staff and the greater MU community.

Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011

  • Soul Food Dinner
    4 - 6:00 p.m., Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center
    Join us for our FREE Soul Food Dinner as we kick off BCAW. First come, first serve. Afterwards, join us for the Black Girls Rock Watch Party from 7-9pm.

Monday, Nov. 7, 2011

  • Play the Part
    7 - 9:00 p.m., Conservation Auditorium
    This musical exhibition will highlight the careers of many influential African American artist and musicians which will be portrayed by your fellow students.

Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011

  • Lecture: African Origins of Civilization, Reclaiming the African Genius
    7 - 8:30 p.m., Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center
    Join the GOBCC and guest speaker Ashra Kwesi as he presents and discusses his Visual Documentation "African Origins of Civilization, Reclaiming the African Genius."

Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011

  • Man in the Mirror: Deception of your Reflection
    7 - 8:30 p.m., Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center
    Students will perform a skit portraying stereotypes of students on campus both negative and positive, and conduct a panel discussion with open dialogue.

Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011

  • Cotton Balls and Graffiti Walls: The History of Black Mizzou
    7 - 8:30 p.m., Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center
    Join students and alumni for a discussion of important events regarding Black Mizzou. Topics will include the denial of Lloyd Gaines admission into the MU Law School in 1936 to the recent graffiti incident last winter.

Friday, Nov. 11, 2011

  • Cotton Balls and Graffiti Walls: The History of Black Mizzou
    7 - 8:30 p.m., Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center
    Join us at The Shack as we wrap up BCAW. Enjoy live music provided by Dirty Muggs, free food and fun.
