MU Celebrates Transgender Awareness Week: Nov. 8 - 17, 2011

Transgender Awareness Week is designed to generate positive dialogue and perspectives about the unique lives and challenges of Transgendered people at Mizzou and throughout the world. Programs, activities, presentations and training are offered to foster education about the transgender experience and honor victims of transphobic violence and hate. We encourage you to come out, learn, and share your support as MU celebrates Transgender Awareness Week.

  • Lucas Silveira of THE CLIKS

    Kick off MU Transgender Awareness Week with a performance, talk and Q & A session with Lucas Silveira, lead-singer, guitarist and creator of the band THE CLIKS.!

  • "Toilet Training" A Documentary on Bathroom Issues and Safety
    9 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Every hour on the hour -- LGBTQ Resource Center, G225 Mu Student Center
    Sponsored by the LGBTQ Resource Center
    "Toilet Training" is a 30 minute documentary video and collaboration between transgender videomaker Tara Mateik and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, an organization dedicated to ending poverty and gender identity discrimination. The video addresses the persistent discrimination, harassment, and violence that people who transgress gender norms face in gender segregated bathrooms. Using the stories of people who have been harassed, arrested or beaten for trying to use bathrooms, "Toilet Training" focuses on bathroom access in public space, in schools, and at work.

  • InsideOUT: Trans in the Workplace
    5 - 6:00 p.m., LGBTQ Resource Center, G225 MU Student Center
    Sponsored by the LGBTQ Resource Center and Career Center
    Join InsideOUT, our weekly discussion group, for a special panel presentation and discussion about being trans in a professional setting. Introductions will be followed by a question and answer discussion with the panel.
  • Safe Space General Training
    6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., LGBTQ Resource Center, G225 MU Student Center
    Sponsored by the LGBTQ Resource Center
    Come learn to be a resource for LGBTQ and ally students, faculty and staff on campus. Safe Space is a training designed to give you the tools and knowledge you need to be an effective ally. Please RSVP to safespacemizzou@gmail.com.

  • Transgender Rememberance: Vigil

    Sponsored by the LGBTQ Resource Center
    A ceremony to remember and honor trans people who have been lost to transphobic violence and hate. Stories of these fallen members of our community will be read. Sponsored by the LGBTQ Resource Center.
