MU Celebrates our MU Veterans: Nov. 6-11, 2011
The University of Missouri invites you to join us in honoring veterans and their commitment to their country. There are many opportunities for you to pay tribute and learn during this week long celebration. Activities are open to our students, faculty, staff and the greater MU community.

Monday, Nov. 7, 2011
- Veterans Week Blood Drive
10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Mark Twain Ballroom, Memorial Student Union
Save a life and serve your community by donating blood at the first Veterans Week Blood Drive. New donors are welcome! Sponsored by the Missouri Student Veterans Association (MSVA). - Speaker: Carol Graham
7:30 p.m., Stotler Lounge, Memorial Student Union
Every 17 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide. Through the sharing of her personal story of losing her two sons, one by suicide and the other in Iraq, Carol Graham offers a tale of loss and survival. She will discuss the importance of recognizing suicide warning signs, fighting the stigma associated with depression and mental health among service members. Sponsored by the Wellness Resource Center – Department of Student Life.

- Medal of Honor Recipient Salvatore Giunta
7:30 - 9 p.m., Jesse Auditorium, Jesse Hall
After saving his squad from the Taliban during a deadly ambush in Afghanistan, Salvatore Giunta became the first living medal of honor recipient since the Vietnam War. He shares his story with the Mizzou community during this year's Veterans Week and discusses the importance of teamwork, selflessness and leadership.

Join the Films Committee for a showing of Restrepo in honor of Veteran's Week. Restrepo is the story of a journalist who spent one year with one platoon in the deadliest valley in Afghanistan.

- Mizzou Joint ROTC Annnual Veterans Day Vigil
10:45 a.m. (Thurs.) - 11:11 a.m. (Fri.), Boone County Courthouse
Volunteer cadets and midshipmen from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force ROTC programs at Mizzou will form two-person details to perform a vigil of honor in front of the Boone County war memorials. Members of Exercise Tiger will read a list of veterans' names during the vigil and at the Courthouse ceremony. - Free Crafternoon: Thank You Cards for Vets

Help the Craft Studio say, "thank you" to our local U.S. veterans. They have free supplies, you make a card and They will deliver the stack of thank you notes to the VA hospital on campus. Sponsored by the MSA/GPC Craft Studio.

- Remembrance Day National Roll Call
10 a.m.-2 p.m., Columbia College, Atkins-Holman Student Commons
The University of Missouri and Columbia College take part in a nationwide event honoring the 10th anniversary of Veterans Day in the post-September 11th era. Roll Call participants will recite names of fallen heroes during the past ten years and observe a moment of silence at 1:00 p.m. CST. - Mizzou Joint ROTC Annual Veterans Day Parade
10:40 a.m., Starts at the Mizzou Columns traveling along Eighth Street to the Boone County Courthouse.
Several Boone County veterans and commemorative organizations such as the Railsplitters, featuring WWII vehicles, and the Boone County Fire District Pipe and Drum Band will join Mizzou cadets and midshipmen in the parade and at the Courthouse ceremony. A new team that will be participating in this year's event is the Nation's only joint rifle team consisting of Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force members-- Mizzou ROTCs' very own Joint Pershing Rifle Team!. - Mizzou Joint ROTC Annual Veterans Day Ceremony
11 a.m., Boone County Courthouse
A short ceremony will be held honoring veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States, past and present. The ceremony will feature Marine Corps Major General Arnold Fields (Ret.) and will conclude with a three volley salute provided by the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 280 and the playing of taps at the 11th minute, of the 11th hour, on the 11th day of November, symbolic of the Armistice ending World War I. - Rededication Ceremony of the War Mothers' Memorial

Eighty-one years ago, on October 25, 1930, grieving but proud mothers watched as the American War Mothers' Memorial was dedicated to the 117 University of Missouri heroes who perished during the Great War. You are cordially invited to attend the rededication of this monument at its new memorial site, just east of the Memorial Student Union. Gather to celebrate one of MU's revered traditions—laying a wreath to honor veterans. This ceremony recognizes the sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Sponsored by the Student Unions Programming Board. - The United States Postal Service Presents the Purple Heart Stamp
1 p.m., Stotler Lounge, Memorial Student Union
Join the Post Office in its presentation of the new 'Forever' Purple Heart Stamp. Visit with Purple Heart recipients and hear their stories. Commemorative programs available for cancellation by the Post Office with November 11, 2011 date. A reception immediately follows the ceremony. Steve Rogers volunteers for a top-secret research project that turns him into a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. Admission is free to Mizzou Veterans and $1 for all others. Sponsored by the MSA/GPC Films Committee
