Who is Empowering Whom: Examining Women's Empowerment

March 12, 2012 at 12:00 PM to March 12, 2012 at 1:00 PM
MU Campus—MU Student Center, G108 (Women's Center)

Description

Join Rebecca Dingo, Women’s and Gender Studies professor, for a presentation on her research on the language of women's empowerment as it has been taken up recently in global women's development initiatives including micro-lending. We will discuss how the women’s empowerment movement may look initially positive and holistic but often the very policies and programs designed by supranational institutions and NGOs can be shortsighted and actually work to further disenfranchise women in poor nations. In particular, we will also examine how empowerment through micro-lending, the new mode of global development for the 21st century, often says more about our own needs in the US as opposed to that elsewhere.

Lunch for the first 25 attendees.

Sponsored by the Women’s History Month Committee, Women’s & Gender Studies Department, Women’s Center and the Chancellor’s Diversity Initiative.

We are committed to ensuring that our events are accessible to all. If you have a disability and anticipate barriers to your participation, please contact Tara at jacksonta@missouri.edu or 573 882-6621 .
