BackTALK ARTS & ASSETS Showcase

This exhibit will take place 3:30-5 p.m. Dec. 10, 2018, in the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center.

IDE’s Access & Leadership Development unit would like to invite you to the BackTALK ARTS & ASSETS Showcase! At this showcase we will engage with and celebrate the middle school students who participated in the BackTALK program (in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia).

This exhibit will take place 3:30-5 p.m. Dec. 10, 2018, in the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center. Students will share about their art and socialize with the professionals in attendance in a fun networking activity.

BackTALK is an asset-based, youth equity initiative created to provide a platform and tools for young people to voice their experiences of victory and oppression, to conceive examples of positive community-building, and for them to learn and act with advocacy and leadership skills as a means to promote social equity. Using an asset-based approach to learning and sharing, students also focus on how to critically examine one’s own experiences, their environment, and society overall through the arts.

It is important for these young people to step foot on MU’s campus and see a diverse group of individuals working to create more inclusive and equitable experiences for underserved and underrepresented populations–for them. If you are available, please come enjoy exciting art, conversation, and light refreshments as we recognize and applaud these young people and their work!
