The IDE Excellence Grant Initiative for Students provides one-time funding for undergraduate or graduate students to creatively strengthen research with inclusion, diversity, and/or equity implications for our increasingly diverse community and student populations enrolled at MU.
- Up to 10 grant initiatives will be awarded within an academic year.
- Awards will be valued at $2,500 with an additional $2,500 awarded to a faculty adviser for oversight of the research project.
- Multidisciplinary collaborations among departments are welcome.
Student applicants must:
- Have full-time status
- Be interested in advancing the principles of the MU Inclusive Excellence Framework
- Demonstrate an interest in:
- The shifting demographics of the MU student population
- The learning needs of current and future MU students
- Research with a meaningful connection to inclusion, diversity, equity, or the professional learning needs of faculty and staff that relate to inclusion, diversity or equity.
Proposal Application Process
Each application should consist of a proposal narrative of no more than three pages, which includes:
- The proposal title
- The name, title and department of all applicants
- A description of the project that identifies how it relates to the grant initiatives (see Purpose above)
- A description of how the applicant’s proposed activities will benefit their respective administrative department, research, course, or pedagogical approach
- Assessment methods to provide a measure of impact and anticipated outcomes/findings
- A letter of endorsement from the student’s faculty adviser as a demonstration of departmental support
- A proposed budget using the template provided (see the Grant Application for a sample of the template)
- An outline of a proposed method of dissemination
- October: Grants become available (notified by email)
- Dec. 15: Proposal submission deadline
- Dec. 18: Awards announced
- Dec. 21-31: Awards accepted
- Jan. 4-8: Orientation and logistics meetings with grant recipients
- March 1: Grant updates submitted to grant administrators
- April 15: Preliminary grant reports due to grant administrators
- May 17: Final reports due to grant administrators
- May 30: Logistics meeting to finalize financial transactions
- The application includes a budget template for applicants’ use.
- It should be completed in a manner that is appropriate to the project’s nature and expenses.
- Examples for anticipated expenses:
- Assessment/evaluation materials (e.g., resource materials, assessment tool(s), survey development).
- Other costs such as speaker fees, travel costs, meeting costs, and limited catering that is relevant to the proposed objective.
- Please note that no standard equipment may be purchased with these funds
All funds must be used solely for the Inclusive Excellence Grant Initiative and its activities.
The following criteria will be examined when applications are reviewed, and should be addressed in the proposal:
How will the proposed project address key areas of inclusion, diversity, and/or equity? (Diverse populations, student learning/global preparation or campus diversity goals.)
How will the project be implemented?
- What strategies will be used?
- What sources of funding will be used?
- What allocation of time is required on the part of the applicant?
The Grant Administrators will only review only those proposals which meet the above selection criteria.
What are the projected procedural changes, course learning objectives, student learning outcomes or research question(s)?
- For example, will the curriculum, course(s), or research project:
- (a) Increase the understanding or promote systemic change on inclusion, diversity, and/or equity issues?
- (b) Increase the global/multicultural awareness of students?
- (c) Help positively impact diverse communities locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally?
Obligations of Grant Recipients
- Recipients will use the funds exclusively for expenses directly related to the grant as outlined in the grant application. All funds must be spent by May 31, 2019.
- Recipients will hold at least three meetings with the Grant Administrators to address:
- Budget transfers;
- Mid-year progress report; and
- Year-end closing of accounts. Other meetings may be scheduled with other awardees to share progress and learn from their progress.
- Recipients will select a method to share their project and its findings with the MU community and other awardees through a workshop, panel discussion, presentation, or other resource.
- Recipients will submit a one-page mid-year progress report by April 15, 2019.
- Submit the completed progress report by May 17, 2019.

Upon award notification, the recipient will provide IDE with an account number to transfer funds.
- Awardees are required to keep an accurate record of all expenditures in accordance with university policy and procedures.
- Acknowledgment of the award is also required in all publications and presentations.
- All materials produced from the award are considered public documents and will be made available upon request.
