IDE will host a series of four events that bring the campus community together to discuss our institution’s diversity and inclusion (D&I) capacity and create action plans for our progress. These discussions will focus on themes within the American Council on Education’s research into MU’s D&I capacity, initiated after the university’s racial protests in 2015. The research is summarized in two reports. The first was published in 2018, Speaking Truth and Acting with Integrity; and the second in 2020, Leading After a Racial Crisis.

The first ACE report examined the events of 2015 and our initial efforts towards transformative and lasting change. The ACE research team reviewed the local, state, and national climate that influenced the situation; assessed MU’s capacity for diversity and inclusion work; and suggested pathways for progress after a racial crisis, using a collective trauma recovery model. In the second ACE report, the research team described our institution’s tensions, emotions, and fragmented perspectives as we work to rebuild, recover and create a new future. The report proposes a type of leadership for MU’s diversity and inclusion work that is provided by “weaver-leaders”. Summaries of both reports are available here:

There are distinct themes that emerge from both reports. They are:

  1. Communications
  2. Setting Expectations
  3. Shared Expectations and Synergistic Relationships

In our kickoff event on Jan. 21, 2021, Vice Chancellor Maurice Gipson, and IDE’s senior leadership team will facilitate a discussion of the major themes in both ACE reports. This event will be followed by action-planning related to each theme. We will focus on Communication on Feb. 25; Setting Expectations on March 25; and Shared Expectations and Synergistic Relationships on April 29.
