Women’s History Month

The University of Missouri celebrates Women’s History Month every March.
Women’s History Month (WHM) at MU is a collaborative effort by the Association of Latin American Students, Chancellor’s Status of Women Committee, Department of Black Studies, Department of Sociology, Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, the Michael A. Middleton Center for Race, Citizenship and Justice and The Bridge in the College of Education and Human Development. Unless otherwise indicated, events are sponsored by the WHM committee. All programs and events are free and open to the public.

Do it for Yourself: Mindfulness and Body Workshop
The Bridge, 4:30 – 6 p.m.
During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn more about research on body image and mindfulness. You will also be exposed to tools and engage in activities that promote the development of self-compassion and mindfulness. During our time together, we will do some self-love activities including self-affirmations and art.

Citizens Sewists: PPE Makers and the COVID-19 Pandemic
Zoom, 3 – 4 p.m.
This talk highlights the groundswell of life-saving efforts by the sewists, quilters and 3D printing enthusiasts who addressed the personal protective equipment (PPE) gap during the first wave of COVID-19 in the U.S. Whether paid or unpaid, PPE makers balanced their personal needs and others’ pandemic needs to help their communities.

Middleton Center: Linguistic Justice Panel
2206 A&B Student Center, 4:30-6 p.m.
In the last year, artists Lizzo and Beyonce were separately called out for using ableist lyrics. Both responded by rewriting these lyrics. While some commentators hailed the changes as linguistic justice, others viewed the changes as linguistic oppression. If artistic language is deemed offensive, how should artists respond? Our panel examines this complex topic through the multiple lenses of gender, race and artistic expression.
